EDUCATION

Objective: Prepare young people to solve climate change by the end of this century; depoliticize climate change to spur large-scale, collective action; and create lifelong climate champions by helping people of all backgrounds embrace outdoor exploration in all four seasons.

Objective: Tap the incredible potential of healthy soil to solve climate change by achieving 1 billion acres of regenerative farming globally, while making the North a leader in commercializing perennial crops.

Climate Generation

Founded by polar explorer Will Steger, Climate Generation uses the power of education to empower individuals, including young leaders, to engage in solutions to climate change. The group’s programs focus primarily on education, public engagement, and youth engagement – providing teachers, youth, community leaders, businesses, and the general public with resources and opportunities to engage in solutions to climate change.

1,500 – Number of Minnesota students empowered by Climate Generation to lead their communities toward climate solutions now and throughout their careers – including 50% students of color – with the support of our 2018 grant.

iMatter

iMatter supports youth leaders to inspire political will in their communities for necessary and just climate action by equipping them to effect sustainable, systems-level change. With an open-source, decentralized, and digital-first approach, iMatter program represents a fresh, new approach on climate change that puts strongly supported young people rightfully at the front of the effort.

120 – Youth leaders in 66 cities engaged in iMatter’s open-source, technology-enabled advocacy platform so far as of December 2018 (up from 32 leaders in 13 cities in 2017).

Climate Central

Climate Central's Climate Matters initiative helps meteorologists and journalists report on climate impacts and solutions in ways that are local, immediate, and personal – and grounded in the latest science. Their experts produce easy-to-understand text and visual materials to help journalists build stories that will engage and enlighten audiences across the country, regardless of geography, political affiliation, or demographic.

631 – Number of broadcast weathercasters (more than one-quarter of the nation’s total) in 210 U.S. media markets reached by Climate Matters’ on-air-ready analysis and data visualizations about localized impacts of climate change.

The Loppet Foundation

The Loppet Foundation works to create a shared passion for year-round outdoor adventure in the Minneapolis area, focusing on underserved youth and families. In particular, the Loppet Foundation plays a central role in making sure all kids, families and adults can participate in cross-country skiing and the rest of our best winter traditions in the North.

14,000 – Square footage of the Loppet Foundation’s new Trailhead facility in North Minneapolis’ Theodore Wirth Park. The Trailhead, to be completed in summer 2018 with significant support from Askov Finlayson, will be a space for diverse communities to unite over a shared enthusiasm for year-round outdoor activities.

Wilderness Inquiry

Wilderness Inquiry connects people from all walks of life to the natural world through shared outdoor adventures. Through the medium of outdoor adventure travel, the organization inspires personal growth, enhanced awareness of the environment and community integration. Wilderness Inquiry adventures encourage people to open themselves to new possibilities and opportunities.

The Land Institute works to create an agriculture system that mimics natural systems in order to produce ample food and reduce or eliminate the negative impacts of industrial agriculture. The organization is the global leader in developing perennial crops, which foster healthy soil that can remove carbon from the atmosphere, while also helping to ensure food and water security over the long term.

#1 – Minnesota’s rank among states growing Kernza, an innovative perennial grain developed by The Land Institute that has enormous climate benefits, by number of farmers and total acres planted.

Green Lands Blue Waters

Green Lands Blue Waters supports the development of and transition to a new generation of multifunctional agricultural systems in the Mississippi River Basin and adjacent areas that integrate more perennial plants and other continuous living cover into the agricultural landscape.

20,000 – Number of 16-ounce tall boys of climate-change-fighting Keep the North Cold beer we brewed in spring 2018 using Minnesota grown Kernza and other local ingredients, in partnership with our friends at Fair State Brewing Cooperative.

Fresh Energy is speeding Minnesota’s transition to a clean energy economy, which will ensure that our region enjoys good health, a vibrant economy, and thriving communities today and for generations to come. From putting Minnesota on the pathway to being a national renewable energy leader to promoting clean transportation options for our growing economy, Fresh Energy has been an essential partner in helping the region develop efficient, cost-effective, and inclusive energy programming.

100% – Buses in Metro Transit’s fleet that will be converted to all-electric by 2040 – a change that constitutes bold climate action, while fostering healthy communities in every corner of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metro Area.

Clean Energy Economy MN

Clean Energy Economy MN (CEEM) is an industry-led nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening Minnesota’s clean energy ecosystem. CEEM is focused on sharing the stories of clean energy businesses and employees and is committed to working across industries and political divides to support a prosperous economy for Minnesotans.

59,000 – Number of Minnesotans currently working in clean energy, a sector in which jobs are growing at a rate two times faster than all other sectors of the state’s economy. 40% of those jobs are in greater Minnesota. The industry employs six times more Minnesotans than fossil fuels.
